Current Features
Content-Addressable Storage
Permanent URLs guaranteed forever. Same content always gets the same address. Built on the same technology Docker uses for software distribution.
Web-Native Rendering
No more PDF pinch-and-zoom. Your papers display beautifully on phones, tablets, and desktops. Native web typography and responsive design.
Accessibility-First Design
Screen reader compatible, keyboard navigation, high contrast support. Research should be accessible to everyone, everywhere.
Basic JavaScript Support
Interactive visualizations, executable code blocks, dynamic content. Your modern authoring tools' features actually work for readers.
Trust & Permanence
Permanent URLs & DOIs
Every paper on Press receives two forms of permanent identifiers:
- Content-addressable URLs - Your paper's URL is mathematically derived from its content. Same content = same URL, forever. This is the same technology Docker uses to distribute software reliably.
- DataCite DOIs - Digital Object Identifiers make your work citable and discoverable through traditional academic infrastructure. DOIs never expire and are recognized by citation managers worldwide.
What if Press shuts down?
Press is designed to outlive its creators. Here's how:
- MIT open source license - The entire platform is open source. Anyone can fork it, run their own instance, or migrate content to new infrastructure.
- Export everything - Download your HTML, metadata, and assets at any time. No lock-in.
- Archival backups - Content is backed up to multiple geographic locations and archival storage services.
- Retraction, not deletion - If you need to withdraw a paper, we mark it as retracted rather than deleting it entirely. The scholarly record stays intact.
- 6-month commitment - If we ever need to shut down, we commit to 6 months notice and will work with the community to migrate content to a new home.
Funding
Press is currently grant-funded as part of The Aris Program. Publishing is free with no paywalls or subscriptions.
If we introduce optional premium features (custom domains, advanced analytics), we'll announce pricing transparently and keep core publishing free forever.
Discoverable Through Modern Tools
Researchers increasingly discover papers by asking AI research assistants rather than browsing databases. Press makes this work:
- Structured metadata - We include proper meta tags (Dublin Core, OpenGraph, Schema.org) so AI tools can accurately extract titles, authors, abstracts, and citations.
- Semantic HTML - Research written with tools like Quarto or RSM Studio already includes semantic structure. Press preserves this so AI tools understand what's a method, result, or conclusion.
- No AI slop - Press never modifies your content. We don't generate summaries, rewrite abstracts, or alter your words. Your writing is your writing.
The result: AI research assistants like Claude, ChatGPT, Scite, Consensus, and Elicit can find, cite, and synthesize your work accurately.
